Solarium Tanning!

Not all of us can afford the time or money to go abroad every few months to top up our sun tans. However the use of tanning salons can ensure a year round bronzed tan. The tanning salon industry has been growing since it was first introduced, and is expected to keep on growing into the future.

Using these salons can make the sunless tanning procedure safer. You will be professionally advised on how your skin type reacts to tanning and will receive a supervised tan. The salon staff will be able to recommend a schedule for you to follow to ensure you are not over-exposed to UV rays which can be damaging to the skin.

In order to achieve a really great tan you will need to visit a tanning salon for a number of sessions, it is a cumulative process and it takes some time to build up the desired results.

It's important to remember that most sunless-tanning products will not protect you from the sun's UVA and UVB rays, so if you're planning to head outside to show off your new glow, be sure to apply some sunscreen.

This is especially true for those with fair skin. You will not be able to cram multiple sessions into the same day, the skin needs time between treatments to recover. In fact reputable tanning salons will not allow you to have your treatments too close together.

If it is possible you should take a shower or bath before each tanning session because clean skin tans better. Also be sure to remove all of your make-up and jewellery before you start. In general healthy, well hydrated skin holds a tan for longer and it is recommended that you moisturise your skin before and after each tanning session.

Before you go to a tanning salon you should check to see if you have any moles, skin discolorations, or freckles. Keep an eye on these when using a tanning bed to make sure they don’t change in colour, texture or size. When using a tanning bed you should always wear goggles to protect your eyes from UV radiation, the tanning salon should provide these. Closing your eyes or using normal sunglasses does not offer sufficient protection.

If you are undergoing treatment for lupus or diabetes or are susceptible to cold sores you should be aware that these conditions can be aggravated through exposure to UV radiation from tanning beds. Also your skin can be more sensitive to artificial light if you have used certain medications like antihistamines, tranquilizers or birth control pills. If you are under 16 years old it is best to avoid using tanning beds altogether.

Do You Know Your Skin Type?

Before you make use of a tanning salon you should be aware of your skin type.

Skin Type 1 - Very fair skin, reddish hair, blue eyes, tendency to burn, never tans. It is unlikely that a tan will be achieved. If you have skin type 1 it is recommended that you do not to use sun beds at all.

Skin Type 2 - Fair skin, blonde to light brown hair, blue to grey eyes, burns easily but tans to a certain extent after prolonged exposure. If you have skin type 2 it is recommended that you use the sunless tanning product manufacturer's minimum tanning times.

Skin Type 3 - Normal skin, dark blonde to brown hair, grey to brown eyes, rarely burns, tans quite easily. If you have skin type 3 it is recommended that you build up to the sunless tanning product manufacturer's maximum recommended tanning times. But you should never exceed this level.

Skin Type 4 - Light brown to dark skin, dark hair and eyes, never burns, tans easily. If you have skin type 4 it is recommended that you use the sunless tanning product manufacturer's maximum tanning times. But again you should never exceed this level.
